Chicago is built on the shores of Lake Michigan, in the centre of the American Midwest. Located in the state of Illinois, Chicago lies 830 km west of Toronto, 1 300 west of New York and 3 300 km north-east of Los Angeles. The city has several waterways: the Chicago, the Calumet and the Des Plaines. The humid continental climate is very variable and produces a high temperature range, with temperatures that can vary by as much as thirty degrees or so. In winter Chicago suffers long periods of frost, caused by cold winds coming from Canada. Warm air rising in summer brings heatwaves that stretch into the autumn, this is the famous Indian summer.

Originally a marshy territory inhabited by Native American tribes, French settlers established themselves at the present-day site of Chicago during the 17th century. In 1763, at the end of the Seven Years' War, the region was conquered by the English. Chicago was then attached to Illinois at the end of the War of Independence. The history of this city, a fascinating one, was marked by tragic events and legendary figures such as the great fire of 1871 that swept away part of the city, or the famous gangs and mafia that operated there during prohibition, notably that of Al Capone, known as "Scarface". Historically, ethnic areas have always been present in this city, such as Chinatown, Little Italy or the Czech district of Pilsen. These immigrations from varied origins helped give the city its rich multicultural character, a world home of gospel, jazz and independent rock.
