The city of Perth lies in the south-west of the western Australian coast, on the banks of the Swan River and close to the Canning, Serpentine and Murray rivers. Its city centre is bounded by the Swan River and the Darling Scarp to the south and east, the railway lines to the north and Kings Park to the west. The city enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate: hot dry summers cooled by a sea breeze nicknamed "The Fremantle Doctor", and mild damp winters with temperatures rarely dropping below 7°. Annual sunshine levels are also high (3200h a year on average).

History & culture
The city was founded in 1829 by Captain James Stirling under the name Swan River Colony, the first in Western Australia. There are, however, traces of the Noongar Aboriginal people going back 40 000 years. The arrival of the Europeans led to violent clashes until the British victory, notably after the battle of Pinjarra in 1834. The city grew strongly from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century with the Australian Gold Rush. These valuable mining resources still contribute, together with the exploitation of the region's other mineral resources and trade with South-East Asia, to the city's economic prosperity.

Visit the Perth Cultural Centre, which brings together the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the Western Australian Museum, the Alexander Library, the State Records Office and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts. The zoo in Perth is also home to no fewer than 164 species over 17ha: dingoes, orangutans, monitor lizards and other fascinating exotic animals!
