New York City is located on the north-east coast of the United States, at the mouth of the Hudson river, and brings together some fifty islands. It is divided into 5 main boroughs: Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island and Queens. The region's climate is characterised by marked seasons: hot, humid summers sometimes lasting until the start of winter ("Indian summers"), sometimes very cold and often snowy winters, and 2 fairly changeable in-between seasons, autumn sometimes being eclipsed by the Indian summer and spring more or less long but generally less hot than summer.
Before being colonised by the Europeans, the territory of New York was occupied by the Lenape Indians. It was the Italian navigator Giovanni Da Verrazzano who, in 1524, was the first European to discover New York bay, which he decided to name Nouvelle-Angoulême. On the conquest of the city in 1624 by the Dutch, it was renamed New Amsterdam. Pierre Minuit, the head of the colony, officially acquired the city's lands from the Lanapes in 1626. It was not until 1664 that the city would be called New York then under English possession. From then on, New York would develop very quickly thanks to its strategic position favourable to maritime trade. In the 19th century, the city would see very substantial demographic growth, until it became the most populous city in the United States. Today, New York has an international reach both economically and culturally.
