San Diego is located on the west coast of the U.S.A, in the south of the state of California. It is bordered by the Mexican border to the south, Orange County to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Cuyamaca and Laguna mountains to the east. The San Diego river crosses the city, its downtown built between the Point Loma and Coronado peninsulas that seem to shelter it, and its suburbs in the canyons and plateaus that form naturally mark out the various districts. The region enjoys a semi-arid oceanic climate, tempered by the coastal winds of the Pacific, and thus offers hot, dry summers cooled by the ocean breeze, and mild, sunny winters.
The city of San Diego was for a long time the territory of the Kumeyaay Native American tribes. The city is considered the cradle of California, this location being the first visited by Europeans. That was the case of the Portuguese explorer João Rodrigues Cabrilho, who arrived in this area as early as 1542, on behalf of the Spanish crown. The first Catholic missionaries arrived in the 17th century, the Presidio fort of San Diego being built in 1769. With Mexico gaining its independence in 1821, the region of San Diego was taken over by the United States in 1848, following the Mexican-American war. A major military centre during the 20th century, the city modernised with the opening of the Westfield Horton Plaza shopping centre, the building of the conference centre, and the regeneration of the Gas Lamp Quarter, focused on tourist activities.
From water sports in the Pacific Ocean to hikes on the trails of the Black Mountains, taking in a sail on one of the region's lakes or a river rafting descent, San Diego multiplies the possibilities. Head as well for the paths of the city zoo, located in the sumptuous Balboa park, and organise a trip to SeeWorld, a huge theme park. To take part in the lively life of San Diego, go for the renovated Gas Lamp Quarter district, where you will find many shops, a conference centre, as well as several bars, restaurants and nightclubs.
