HISTORY & CULTURE
Originally inhabited by the native Guanches, the coasts of Tenerife were discovered in 1494 by the Spanish explorer Alonso Fernández de Lugo. Shortly afterwards, settlements were established on the island, propelling it into a major economic and cultural centre over the centuries. Benefiting from natural resources such as timber, salt and fishing, Tenerife prospered thanks to maritime trade as well as the emergence of industries such as agriculture, tourism, fishing and crafts. The island's reputation also extends to its culinary specialities, notably goat's cheese, fresh fish and local wines, which attract food lovers from all over the world.
In Tenerife, activities depend a great deal on the local setting: exploring the beaches, the volcanic landscapes, the markets, the villages and the coastal walks.
THE CITY IN PRACTICAL TERMS
Cruises along the coast are also available aboard paddle steamers, offering a picturesque experience. Ferries are a practical option for exploring the coastal villages as well as the other Canary Islands. Visitors will also find many shopping centres in the area, including the Centro Comercial Parque Santiago 6 in Playa de las Américas, one of the largest on the island.
