Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, built on the banks of the Tagus a few kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean. The city spreads over several hills, linked by funiculars and the famous tram 28. The climate is mild all year round, with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters, one of the most pleasant climates in Europe.
Founded by the Phoenicians and then developed by the Romans and the Moors, Lisbon became in the 15th and 16th centuries the heart of the great Portuguese maritime discoveries. The 1755 earthquake deeply rebuilt its centre, which is now classical and orderly. The city remains marked by fado, a melancholic popular song, and by the azulejos that adorn its façades.
During your language course in Lisbon, discover the historic Alfama district, the Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. Take tram 28 through the picturesque districts, or enjoy the miradouros, those viewpoints offering a view of the city and the Tagus. The beaches of Cascais and Estoril are less than an hour away by train.
To get around Lisbon, the network of metro, trams and funiculars covers the city effectively, despite its hilly terrain. The cost of living remains one of the most affordable in Western Europe, for accommodation as well as for eating out.
