Built at more than 600 metres above sea level on the geological plateau of the Meseta, Madrid lies at the centre of Spain, more precisely in the province of Castile. Divided into 21 districts, the Spanish capital has 129 neighbourhoods. The best known are found to the south, such as the Paseo del Prado or the Palacio Real, as well as to the west around the famous Plaza Mayor. The continental climate brings cold, harsh winters and very hot, very dry summers, with temperatures regularly above 30°C. Spring and autumn are mid-seasons considered to be damp.
It was the emir of Cordoba, Mohammed I, who founded the city of Madrid around the year 880. At the time the city was no more than a fortress built to protect Toledo and the royal court it housed. Invaded by the Christians in the 11th century, Madrid saw the Catholic and Muslim religions coexist peacefully, which was not the case in the other cities of Castile. In 1561, Madrid became the capital of the Kingdom of Spain under Philip II, but it took the Bourbon dynasty for the city to become worthy of a great European royal capital. Madrid then went through an unprecedented expansion thanks to the work of great French and Italian architects. The reign of the Bourbons, Bonaparte's occupation, civil war, Franco's dictatorship: the history of the city of Madrid is particularly rich. Democracy, back in 1977, marked the beginning of the movida and the return of impressive development.
The Spanish capital has many architectural and urban treasures that you will not fail to discover during your language trip in Madrid. The palaces, churches and monasteries of the Madrid of the Habsburgs will dazzle you, the monuments, gardens and squares of the Madrid of the Bourbons will impress you. The Spanish capital is indeed known for being a very lively city, buzzing constantly at night. If you like going out, you will happily throw yourself into Madrid's nightlife by heading to the tapas bars and clubs of the Chueca and Malasana districts.
