Where do the students live?

Irish host families may live in the city, in the countryside, in a flat, in a house, or with or without children. Some host families have pets, others do not.
Our host families come in different shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common - they love learning about new cultures and giving international students an unforgettable family experience in Ireland.
Move and Study is dedicated to giving students a truly immersive exchange experience in an Irish home. Students will be placed with families who speak English as their main language with only 1 or 2 international students in the house. If there are 2 international students in the house, they will be of different nationalities - to make sure that the students speak English at all times.
As a member of a host family, international students will experience life in Ireland. Their host family will introduce them to Irish culture and help them feel at ease in their new home. They will have the unique opportunity to genuinely improve their English, to experience daily life alongside the Irish and, above all, to build bonds with a caring family with whom they will probably stay in touch for the rest of their lives!

Howya! Tá Gaeilge agat?

Your host family in Ireland speaks English, but a large part of the population can also speak Irish. A few good Irish phrases to know are "Dia duit" (Hello), "Tá Gaeilge agat?" (Do you speak Irish?) and "Sláinte!" (Cheers!). "What's the craic?" is also a popular way of asking people "What's new?" and you often hear the Irish describe something funny as "gas"! Studying in Ireland gives you the unique opportunity to improve your English while learning some of the ancient Irish language.

What does an Irish host family provide?

Once you are accepted into a secondary school as part of a classic, SELECT or academic exchange programme, Move and Study will assign you to a host family in your placement area. To get to school, pupils can walk, cycle, take a school bus, take public transport, or their host family can drive them.
In the house, students may have their own room, or share with another international student.
Every student has their own bed, study space, wardrobe and space. International students share the rest of the house with their host family and they will share meal times, social times, outings and holidays together throughout their stay.
Host families are there to support students and help them settle into their life in Ireland, by helping them practise their English, by making them feel welcome, by sharing local cooking and culture, by answering any questions they may have, and by supporting them when they need help or are ill.

Continuous service and support

Every Move and Study student in Ireland is protected by the Service Promise, so you can be sure that you will receive continuous support from before your arrival until the day you finish your secondary school programme. Every pupil is assigned a student liaison officer, who works with the pupil, their host family and the school to guide pupils and families and to liaise in order to resolve problems.
Our 24-hour, 7-day-a-week telephone line allows pupils and parents to reach us in an emergency.
