Canada's largest metropolis, Toronto is located in Ontario, of which it is the capital, on the shores of the lake of the same name. It lies in the south of Canada and is crossed by the Humber and Don rivers. The lake's former tributaries have left within it heavily wooded ravines, pleasant for walks between 2 English lessons, and Toronto has a humid continental climate, moderate compared with the rest of Canada, with hot and sometimes muggy summers, cold winters and generally well-marked seasons.

Originally a former French fortress named Fort Rouillé built in 1750, the city took the name of Toronto in 1834, from a word in a Mohawk dialect meaning "the place where the roots of the trees soak in the water". Throughout its history, Toronto was twice the capital of Canada and is today a major centre of Canadian media with 7 television and radio network headquarters, including Radio-Canada and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The city also enjoys a certain cultural renown and its location has made it one of Canada's major land and air transport hubs. Its architecture is modern, with many skyscrapers including the famous CN Tower, the third tallest in the world.
