A compact university city, between historic colleges, the river Cam, parks and museums.
Cambridge is a university city located 80 km north of London, crossed by the river Granta, also known as the "Cam". It lies to the south of the Fenlands, former marshes naturally drained and turned into fertile land converted into farmland over time. The climate is oceanic, largely influenced by the Gulf Stream and characterised by relatively heavy annual rainfall spread throughout the year. In summer, you will experience mild winters in Cambridge and mild but windy winters.
The site of Cambridge took on strategic military importance during the Roman occupation of Great Britain, up to the 4th century. The Saxons, then the Vikings, developed the small town through trade, before it joined the England of William the Conqueror. In 1200, the School of Pythagoras was the first educational building constructed. Fleeing the violence raging in Oxford, students founded in Cambridge the second oldest university, including Peterhouse college, built in 1284. Over the following centuries, Cambridge saw the building of King's College Chapel in 1515, the Cambrigde University Press publishing house in 1534, the canalisation works begun in 1610, then the arrival of the railway in 1845. While the university hub works perfectly, research and innovation now drive the local economy, through the Silicon Fen.

The university institutions do not in fact form a campus but are woven into the city. Go back through history by discovering the oldest and most spectacular institutions: King's College Chapel, Trinity College, St John's College, Emmanuel College... Let yourself be lulled by the calm of the canal waters, while taking in the charm of the traditional houses that line them. Set right in the city centre, close to the station, the botanical garden is also a special place, with its 16 hectares, its lake and its glasshouses. Cambridge finally has many museums and churches that tell the rich history of the city.
For getting around during your English language trip in Cambridge, think of the bike, an activity made easier by fairly flat terrain. The cost of living is fairly affordable, remaining lower than in the major Swiss cities or the French regional metropolises. On the shopping side, head for the two main shopping centres, The Grand Arcade in the city centre and The Grafton, with its multiplex cinema.
