Canterbury is a city in the county of Kent, in south-east England, less than an hour by train from London. Its historic centre, surrounded by remains of the medieval walls, is organised around its cathedral, one of the oldest and most important in England. The climate is temperate oceanic, similar to the rest of southern England.
Founded in Roman times, Canterbury became a major centre of English Christianity from the 6th century, with the founding of its cathedral. The murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170 made it one of the main pilgrimage sites of medieval Europe, immortalised by Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. The cathedral, St Augustine’s Abbey and St Martin’s Church are UNESCO World Heritage sites.
