Fort Lauderdale is the largest city in Broward County in south-eastern Florida. Some forty kilometres north of Miami, it stretches along 11 km of coastline and reaches as far inland into the marshy plain on its western side towards the Intracoastal Waterway. This city of water is crossed by more than 400km of canals, 250 km of them navigable. It enjoys a tropical climate characterised by two marked seasons: hot, humid, sometimes rainy summers, and mild, dry winters with mild temperatures that can reach more than 20° in December.

The first Spanish settlers arrived in the region in the 16th century. That was probably one of the factors that triggered the 2nd Seminole War at that time, notably after the famous attack on a farm by members of the local Native American people: the Tequesta. The fort was abandoned at the end of the war and it was not until 1911 that it was inhabited again, then became the heart of Fort Lauderdale as the city is today. The arrival of the railway was an essential asset in the region's population growth, along with the dazzling boom the city experienced at the end of the 2nd World War thanks to the return of many former residents. The economy of this renowned seaside resort is also today based notably on the tourist industry it generates.

During this language trip to Fort Lauderdale, treat yourself to a relaxing cruise and see the city from its canals by boat, or choose to bask in the sun on its endless, sunny beaches. Take the opportunity as well to visit the house of the famous painter Frédéric Clay: the Bonnet House and its green park of about 15 hectares. You will also have the chance to spend an evening in Miami, not far away, known among other things for its trendy Latin bars. Fort Lauderdale also has many venues, among them the Broward Center of Performing Arts, the largest in the city, where you can attend concerts and shows of every kind. The city also holds a huge swimming pool - water sports centre, among the largest in the U.S.A: the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

Getting around during your English studies in Fort Lauderdale can be done with the Broward Country Transit buses, which serve the various districts of the city but also the neighbouring towns and Miami, also reachable via Amtrak (the American national rail transport company). The city also has an international airport to which it is linked by the Tri-Rail. The cost of living in Fort Lauderdale is, finally, relatively low: reckon on about 30€ for a meal for 2 in a standard restaurant, compared with around fifty euros in Paris ...
