Capital of the Australian state of New South Wales and the country's largest city by population, located on the south-east coast, Sydney is divided into 38 local government areas and more than 650 suburbs. It lies in a coastal basin on the western edge of the Pacific, east of the Blue Mountains, north of the Woronora plateau and south of the Hawkesbury river, and so offers varied panoramas with exotic wildlife and plant life nearby for an exciting language course in Australia. The region also enjoys a subtropical climate with mild winters and hot humid summers plus around 300 days of sunshine a year!
Originally home to 4'000 to 8'000 Aboriginal people, the region that now houses Sydney was discovered by the British navigator James Cook, who founded a penal colony there in 1770 under the name Port Jackson; the first free settlers arrived between 1800 and 1850 and its growth never stopped, rising exponentially after gold deposits were discovered in the neighbouring state of Victoria. To this day it is Australia's largest economic and commercial centre, in which tourism plays an important part thanks in particular to a rich culture, to the many festivals it hosts (the Big Day Out, Tropfest, the Sydney Festival, etc.) and to a pleasant environment.
Sydney, Australia's most iconic city, is not short of exciting activities to enrich your language course. Between two English lessons, you can relax on the magnificent beaches of Bondi Beach and even try surfing. If you are a wildlife enthusiast, you will not want to miss Taronga zoo, easily reached by ferry from the historic and lively harbour of Circular Quay. For art lovers, the great Art Gallery of New South Wales offers world-renowned touring exhibitions. And for a relaxing outdoor experience, do not miss the Royal Botanic Gardens, where Australian flora mingles with plant species from all over the world. Finally, the docks of Darling Harbour are a popular place to relax where you can enjoy parks, museums, restaurants and bars, while being a stone's throw from Sydney Aquarium.
The cost of living there is reasonable, a little more expensive than in Paris on average (55€ for a meal for 2 in a mid-range restaurant against 52€ in Paris) and you will find a host of shopping centres in Sydney.
