Diploma in Applied Communications (optional Co-Op)

About this programme

Introduction

Our Applied Communications programme gives students the concrete communication skills that are essential to succeed in the business world. Through a range of business-focused subjects such as customer and public relations, as well as inter-company and interpersonal communications, we pass on skills that are relevant and applicable in a professional context.

In our interconnected society, effective communication is now one of the most sought-after skills in successful companies. Our aim is to build our students' confidence and skills in this crucial area. To do so, students will explore corporate communication structures such as downward, upward and horizontal communication models, as well as the various modes and platforms of communication, including reports, websites, presentations, social media and web conferences.

Our students will acquire the communication skills needed to succeed, while developing their business knowledge and their leadership skills. This will prepare them to communicate effectively in the business world, in education and in their personal lives. What is more, this course will give them the skills needed to succeed should they choose to continue their professional development or to study at one of our partner schools.

Key Modules:

• Marketing Principles
• Leadership in the Professional Environment
• Practical Sales Techniques
• Essential Business Calculations
• Customer Relationship Management
• Foundations of Canadian Business

SEMESTER 1: 6 MONTHS

COMMUNICATIONS 100 (8 WEEKS)

This course lays the foundations for students wishing to improve their communication skills in a professional or academic context. They will learn to communicate clearly in interpersonal interactions, gaining effective strategies and appropriate vocabulary to express their ideas unambiguously.

COMMUNICATIONS 200 (8 WEEKS)

This course builds on the skills acquired in Communications 100 by focusing on more complex interpersonal communication. Students will learn to structure and present their ideas clearly, thus avoiding any misunderstanding, while developing their ability to assess their own work and that of their peers critically.

COMMUNICATIONS 300 (8 WEEKS)

This course focuses on intercultural communication. Students, who already have advanced communication skills, will concentrate on strategies for understanding and analysing complex concepts critically. Through debates and discussions, they will learn to present their ideas objectively and persuasively, an essential skill for succeeding in a diverse academic or professional setting.

SEMESTER 2: 6 MONTHS

Once the series of Communication courses is complete, students move on to the second half of their programme. They must take three compulsory courses and choose three optional courses.
The compulsory courses are:
• Leadership in the Professional Environment
• Foundations of Business Communication
• Presentation and Professional Practice

Students may choose three of the following courses to complete their diploma:
• Communication for Customer Satisfaction
• Foundations of Canadian Business
• Essential Business Calculations
• Marketing Principles
• Practical Sales Techniques
• Customer Relationship Management

It is important to note that there may be timetable clashes between the optional courses. Students are encouraged to consult an adviser at the start of the programme to avoid any scheduling problems.

CO-OP WORK EXPERIENCE (OPTIONAL): 1 YEAR

The paid part of the Co-op Work Experience is a crucial element of this programme. This is where students put the theoretical concepts learned in class into practice in a real professional context. This module aims to give students practical experience in a Canadian working environment, in support of the programme's learning objectives.

Throughout the programme, students will follow a four-week job search course to prepare for their co-op experience. This course, which takes place in the afternoon, will help them look for job opportunities, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and build a professional image.

Students will have the support of a co-op coordinator, who will help them find suitable work experience and guide them throughout this part of the programme. At the end of the course, each student must complete a two-week final project called the Capstone in order to obtain their diploma. This project takes place at the end of their co-op period.
