The town of Byron Bay is the easternmost town in Australia. It lies in the north-east of the State of New South Wales, 800 km north of Sydney, the country's economic capital, and 200 km south of Brisbane. During your English language course in Byron Bay, you will be able to enjoy the magnificent fine sandy beaches, which attract many tourists. The landscape is marked by the powerful Byron Bay lighthouse, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean. The climate is particularly pleasant, with almost constant sunshine and ideal temperatures for swimming.
This seaside town built much of its reputation in the 1970s, before quickly becoming extremely popular thanks to beaches as far as the eye can see and wild country loved by sportspeople and explorers of every kind from all over the world. The hippie movement in particular left its mark on the town's lively cultural and artistic scene, especially around major music festivals such as the Roots Music festival or the East Coast Blues ... In an ideal setting, and a town emblematic of the sport, surfing is obviously one activity to try during this language trip!
Take a trip to Arawak national park between two English lessons in Byron Bay, to discover wonderfully rich and exceptional wildlife and plant life. You may also have the chance to admire a sunrise or sunset over the Pacific Ocean from Cape Byron and even, between May and November, to watch majestic humpback whales. If you are keen on water sports, this is the ideal destination for your language course: ride the legendary waves of Wategos and Main Beach surfing, kite-surfing or kayaking, or opt for the unique and thrilling experience of a hang-gliding flight for the bravest. A chance to burn some energy before returning to the calm of a ride on horseback, a walk or a bike ride along the beach. A market is also held once a month in the town, giving you the chance to discover exotic and surprising local specialities.
The journey can be quite long between western Europe and Byron Bay, generally including two stopovers, the last of which is often in Brisbane, the nearest international airport. On the ground, transport will generally be by bus, Byron Bay being moreover only about 6 km from the Pacific Highway. The cost of living there is relatively high, mainly because of the many imports the island has to make, but there is cheap accommodation.
