Santa Barbara is located in California, on the edge of the channel of the same name between the wide beaches of the U.S.A's Pacific coast and the hills of the Santa Ynez Mountains. 145km north-west of Los Angeles, it forms a single urban area with the neighbouring towns of Goleta, Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria. The Santa Barbara region also enjoys a sunny Mediterranean climate, characterised by mild temperatures all year round, dry summers and peak rainfall in winter. The local aquatic wildlife is also home to some 30 species of whales, dolphins and seals.
Built on the territory of the Chumash Native Americans, Santa Barbara was originally a fortress founded by Spanish missionaries in 1782 and the city's current architecture, in which many houses have a roof of red barrel tiles, has kept that picturesque colonial character, with Mexican-style buildings as well, such as the old station. Because just like Los Angeles, the city was conquered by Mexico after it gained independence, before being ceded along with the rest of California to the United States by the treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo in 1848. Today, the city is mainly a tourist seaside resort and a favoured destination for holidaymakers.
