Map & landmarks

Brighton is an English city in East Sussex, paired with nearby Hove, about 100 km south of London. It lies on the coast between the English Channel and the chalk range of the South Downs and is crossed by the seasonal river Whalesbone, which dries up in summer. The climate is temperate, mild and often sunny during the fine season, with refreshing breezes all year round and showers in winter. Temperatures generally range between 3° at the coldest of winter and 21° in summer.

City life and landmarks

History & culture

Originally, Brighton, formerly Bristelmestone, was no more than a modest fishing village, regularly subjected to French attacks. The town was even burned to the ground in 1514, apart from the layout of the roads and St Nicholas's church. Brighton then developed thanks to the virtues that doctors attributed to sea bathing. The future George IV took a liking to the place and settled there, which considerably increased the fame of the spa town. The arrival of the railway then multiplied the appeal of Brighton, its area increasing tenfold in three centuries. During the 1960s and 1970s a modernist artistic movement developed in the seaside resort, greatly influencing the spirit of the city. It is currently a major tourist and university centre, home to more than 40 English schools, which makes it one of the main hubs for language courses in England.

things to do / to see

The place to visit first during your English language course in Brighton remains the magnificent Royal Pavilion. Built under George IV, between 1813 and 1823, the building is above all extravagant, ultimately forming a majestic oriental palace. The architecture is clearly inspired by Indian monuments, while inside the Chinese style is on display. Head for Brighton Pier, that jetty always lively with its funfair, its restaurants and its many attractions. Let the view roll past by taking the Volk's Electric Railway, and do not forget to enjoy the town centre, in particular its pretty Clocktower and its narrow streets, the Lanes, whose original buildings have been renovated to give a singular character to Brighton.

The city in practical terms

The rail service also gets you to London in an hour. Note too that Gatwick international airport is only 30 minutes from Brighton. Be aware that the cost of living is fairly affordable, less expensive for example than in the big cities of Switzerland.
