City life and landmarks

history & culture

Marbella, the 2nd most populous city in the province of Malaga, has a rich history going back to the Palaeolithic. The present-day city of Marbella was founded by the Romans under the name of Barbelusa. To this day the town still bears many traces of that Roman occupation, such as the settlement of Rio Verde and the baths of Guadalmina. From the Muslim invasions onwards, the town of Barbelusa, by then called Barbella, was ruled by several dynasties before coming under the control of the Kingdom of Granada. It was the Christians who gave the Spanish seaside town its final name of Marbella.
