The city of Oxford lies in the county of Oxfordshire, 80 kilometres north-west of London. It is crossed by two rivers, the Thames and the Tamise, which meet to the south of Oxford. The city of dreaming spires enjoys a temperate maritime climate, strongly influenced by air masses coming from the Atlantic Ocean. Oxford is in fact only 130 kilometres east of Bristol and of the Severn estuary. Rainfall is heavy throughout the year. Average temperatures range between 4°C in the winter season and 17°C in the summer period.

History & culture

The first notable settlement in the region of Oxford was by the Saxons, in the 5th century. The place grew in importance because it was where herds of oxen crossed the ford of the Thames. In the 10th century, Oxford lay on the border of two kingdoms: Wessex and Mercia. The city grew still more important thanks to the charter granted by Henry II. The university is mentioned in the 12th century, the colleges being founded during the following century, in particular St Edmund Hall, established in 1225. The Catholic tradition was then maintained, before major works, canals and the railway, developed the city.

Walk the paths of the Cotswolds Wildlife Park and Gardens nature reserve as well. Once there, it is impossible not to visit the buildings of the university's 39 colleges. You may recognise the setting of several films and series shot in these places. To get to know the local culture better between two English lessons, head for the oldest museum in the world, the Ashmolean Museeum.
