By general language or language of communication, we mean the register of language used for conversation and, more generally, for everyday exchanges, as opposed to specialist language, which refers to acquiring vocabulary specific to a particular environment or occupation.

A language course is a structured programme designed to teach and improve a person's language skills in a foreign language. Language courses are built to help learners acquire a better understanding and command of the target language by focusing on different aspects such as grammar, syntax, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading and listening comprehension, and written and spoken expression.

Aims of language courses

Improving listening and speaking: Language courses let learners practise and develop their conversation skills, working on pronunciation, intonation and accent, as well as broadening their vocabulary.

Developing reading and writing: Language courses also help learners improve their reading and writing skills by working on grammar, syntax, punctuation and sentence construction.

Deepening cultural knowledge: In addition to language skills, language courses often provide information about the culture, history and customs of the country of the target language, helping learners to understand and appreciate local culture and traditions better.

Building confidence: Language courses encourage learners to practise and use the target language in a variety of situations, which builds their confidence and their ease in using the foreign language.
