Noosa is a region of the Sunshine Coast, in the south-east of the state of Queensland, north of Maroochy Shire and south of Cooloola. It lies on the east coast of Australia. Set on the banks of the Noosa Everglades river, it offers varied panoramas: from the fine sandy beaches of the bay to the cliffs and woods of its National Park, by way of the superb dunes and rainforests of Fraser Island not far away. The region also enjoys a temperate oceanic climate, sunny and with generally small temperature differences between summer and winter.

Noosa is a name of Aboriginal origin, "noothera", meaning "shadow" or "shady place". Noosa Shire is indeed shielded from the sun by a thick forest, a natural refuge from the overwhelming heat to which the region is sometimes subject. Known for escaping several times from the Moreton Bay penal settlement, David Bracefell was behind the discovery of Noosa in 1828. Nicknamed "Wandy" by the Aboriginal people, he was the first European to visit the region. In 1942, Andrew Petrie and Henry Russell were the first white settlers to explore the territory of Noosa aboard a whaleboat in search of timber, pasture and cattle. It was only a little later, in the 20th century, that the prospect of finding gold at Gympie brought many settlers to settle and attracted tourists. Today a true paradise for surfers, the region is a highly sought-after tourist destination.
