The main city of southern Japan (Kyūshū), known for its food and its economic dynamism.
Fukuoka is the largest city on the island of Kyūshū, in southern Japan, on the edge of the inland sea. Its position has historically made it a gateway to nearby Korea and mainland China. The climate is milder and more humid than in northern Japan, with short, temperate winters.
A strategic port since antiquity because of its closeness to the Asian mainland, Fukuoka withstood two Mongol invasion attempts in the 13th century. The modern city was formed in 1889 by the merger of the neighbouring towns of Fukuoka and Hakata; the name Hakata is still used for the station district and for a ramen noodle speciality famous throughout Japan.
During your language stay in Fukuoka, discover the Kushida Shrine, Fukuoka Castle Park and the yatai, the little street stalls where you can try Hakata ramen. The beaches of Hakata Bay are a few minutes from the city centre, and Nagasaki is about two hours away by train.
The cost of living is clearly lower than in Tokyo, with a more relaxed and less touristy atmosphere.
