Stafford House English school in Canterbury

Stafford House International, English school in Canterbury

Stafford House teaches English in Canterbury, a historic university city in Kent, in a human-sized school. Here is who they are, how they teach, what sets them apart, and the centre we offer.

Who is Stafford House International?

Stafford House is an English as a foreign language school in the United Kingdom. Its official website states that it has been welcoming students since 1952 and that it is part of the CATS Global Schools education group. It announces 3,319 students in 2025, from 77 nationalities.

The schools are accredited and regularly inspected by the British Council; the website also displays the logos of a member of English UK and of a Cambridge exam centre. The group has three schools in the United Kingdom (London, Cambridge and Canterbury); it also offers programmes for young people, managed on a separate site, which do not appear on this page.

We offer its centre for adults: Canterbury.

How they teach

For Stafford House, the best way to learn English is to use it every day: the courses aim at real communication, in class as in everyday life in the United Kingdom. The courses develop speaking, comprehension, reading and writing, with a structured pathway, regular feedback and assessments.

Group courses start every Monday, from beginner to advanced level. In Canterbury, classes have 10 students on average and 15 at most; the school highlights smaller classes than in London and personalised attention.

In our catalogue, the General English course comes in three paces: standard (20 lessons of 45 minutes per week), intensive (25 lessons) and super intensive (30 lessons).

What sets Stafford House apart

  • A human-sized school in a historic city. Canterbury offers, according to the school’s website, a calmer pace than London, smaller classes and good value for money; the school is a few minutes’ walk from the centre and the stations.
  • British Council accreditation. This is the accreditation the school claims in so many words; it gives rise to regular inspections.
  • A social programme every week. Free and paid activities: walking tour of the city, badminton, pub evenings, conversation café, film nights, as well as day trips in Kent.
  • Exams prepared on site. The school prepares for IELTS and the Cambridge B2 First and C1 Advanced exams; exam fees are not included in the course, and the Cambridge exams in Canterbury are taken on paper, according to the website.

Its programmes, and for whom

For adults, the website offers in particular: General English, the Explore programme (language and culture), the Unlimited package, English in one-to-one lessons, Business English, preparation for IELTS and Cambridge exams; in Canterbury, the school also offers CELTA teacher training and short teacher training courses.

In our catalogue, eight courses can be booked in Canterbury, from age 16: General English, Cambridge C1 Advanced preparation and IELTS preparation, each at 20, 25 or 30 lessons per week depending on the course. IELTS requires, according to the website, at least an intermediate level; Cambridge C1 Advanced is aimed at advanced levels.
