OHLA has been teaching English in Florida since 1998, with a campus in Miami’s Brickell business district. Here is who they are, how they teach, what sets them apart, and the centre we offer.
Who is OHLA?
OHLA — Open Hearts Language Academy — is an English as a foreign language school created in 1998. On its official website, it presents itself as a school accredited by the CEA (Commission on English Language Program Accreditation), authorised to enrol international students (SEVIS), a member of NAFSA and TESOL, which welcomes students of more than 70 nationalities.
The official website also presents OHLA as a gateway to American higher education: agreements with partner universities make it possible, after the English programme, to continue towards a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
The school has campuses in several Florida cities (Miami, Orlando-Celebration and Tampa on its “Locations” page). Here we offer the Miami campus, in Brickell.
How they teach
The General English programme works on comprehension and fluency in both speaking and writing: listening, vocabulary, structure and word use, reading, writing, speaking. Optional courses complement it, for example strategic reading, English sounds, speaking fluency or English at work.
The curriculum has nine levels, from beginner to advanced; each level lasts ten weeks and is divided into five two-week blocks. A written and oral placement test takes place on the first day to place everyone in the right class, and an exit exam gives a certificate at the end of the programme. You can enrol from two weeks and stay as long as you wish.
Classes can hold up to 15 students; the school states an average of 10 to 12. Three paces of group courses exist on its website: 20, 25 or 30 lessons per week, Monday to Friday.
What sets OHLA apart
- A school accredited and authorised for student visas. OHLA is CEA-accredited and authorised to issue the I-20 form for the F-1 visa; the 25-lesson course in our catalogue is the one that corresponds to this visa.
- A path to American university. After English, OHLA presents agreements with more than a hundred partner universities and a bachelor’s and master’s programme offered on site with Westcliff University.
- Exam preparation. TOEFL and IELTS preparation courses, with a mock exam every two weeks, are offered on the official website.
- A campus in the heart of Miami. The centre is located in Brickell, Miami’s financial district, one block from Mary Brickell Village and its shops and restaurants.
Its programmes, and for whom
On its official website, OHLA offers General English (levels 1 to 4, from beginner to intermediate), academic and pre-academic English (levels 5 to 9), TOEFL and IELTS preparation, private lessons, a virtual campus for studying remotely and a gap year. You must have finished high school in your country and not be a native English speaker.
In our catalogue, courses can be booked from age 18: semi-intensive English of 20 lessons per week, intensive English of 25 lessons per week (F-1 visa) and private lessons of 10 lessons per week. Lessons last 50 minutes. The website’s other options (30 lessons, exam preparation) are not priced in our 2027 catalogue and are available on request for a quote.
