Who is Lexis?

Lexis opened its first school in Noosa in 2004 and today has six campuses in Australia. On its official website, the group presents itself as a company that has remained family-run and independent, and has welcomed more than 55,000 students in twenty-two years.

Lexis English is one of the brands of Lexis Education, which also brings together vocational training, junior programmes, culinary arts and language schools in Japan and Korea. Here we present only its English schools for adults in Australia.

How they teach

Starts take place every Monday, all year round, in interactive classes. The General English course has five levels, from elementary to advanced, full-time or part-time; each student can add elective courses (pronunciation, academic writing, business English, music, drama, current affairs…), depending on the campus and the level.

For stays of more than eight weeks, the Lexis 360° programme provides an individual study plan: initial interview, goals set with teachers, individual feedback every month. The group also highlights follow-up that runs from the first enquiry to the last day: studies, accommodation, work, health or settling in.

What sets Lexis apart

• Accommodation managed by the group. According to its website, Lexis runs its own accommodation teams on each campus: the people who arrange the host family or the residence are part of the school, not of an outside agency.
• Six campuses, between beach and big city. Noosa, Sunshine Coast, Byron Bay and Manly by the ocean; Brisbane and Perth in the city centre. The group states that it is possible to move from one campus to another during the stay.
• An approved Cambridge exam centre. The group’s website presents the school as an approved Cambridge exam centre, with preparation for Cambridge exams and IELTS.

Its programmes, and for whom

In our catalogue, courses are intended for adults from age 18. The General English course is available full-time and part-time on all six campuses, with starts every Monday. IELTS preparation is offered in Brisbane, Byron Bay, Perth, Sunshine Coast and Sydney; Cambridge preparation on all six campuses.

Other programmes are found on certain campuses only: English in Action: Surfing (English and professional surf lessons, from one to four weeks) in Byron Bay, Noosa and Sydney; Premium Small Group, in classes of five students at most and reserved for ages 30 and over, in Sydney and Noosa (Noosa departures from August 2027); barista training in Brisbane and Noosa, bar and cocktail training in Noosa; teacher training and Business Innovation in Byron Bay. The group also offers junior programmes, which are not part of our adult catalogue.

  At 288 Edward Street, levels 11 and 12, in the very centre of Brisbane and a few steps from Central Station. A large, modern campus, with the course choice of a big city: from General English to IELTS, Cambridge exams and barista training. After class, the river, South Bank, West End and Fortitude Valley; at the weekend, the beaches of the coast. Accommodation: host family or Student One residence.

  At 16-20 Ruskin Street, a few minutes from the beach. One of the group’s smallest campuses, where students and staff get to know each other quickly, with a residence directly on the campus. Byron Bay blends surf, music, markets and cafés; the campus also offers the English in Action: Surfing programme. Accommodation: host family or on-site residence.

A human-sized seaside resort, between Main Beach, river and national park, where tourism and hospitality also offer opportunities to practise English every day.   At 197 St Georges Terrace, ground floor, in the city centre of Perth, with transport, cafés and shops nearby. A modern campus with bright rooms, with a choice of daytime or evening timetable. A city on the Indian Ocean, between the Swan River, beaches and the great open spaces of Western Australia. Accommodation: host family, or the Juno House residence (less than five minutes’ walk from the campus) or a second residence.

  At 26 Duporth Avenue, level 6, in Maroochydore, the heart of the Sunshine Coast, with the Sunshine Plaza shopping centre right next door and beaches nearby. A mostly local community, with fewer international students than in the big cities, to speak English outside class. Accommodation: host family, River House or River Loft residences.

  At 30-32 South Steyne, in Manly, a few metres from the beach (the group’s website calls the campus “Lexis Manly Beach”). A ferry links Manly to Circular Quay and central Sydney. Daytime or evening timetable to choose from; it is also the campus for the Premium Small Group programme, for ages 30 and over. Accommodation: host family or Manly Bunkhouse residence.
