The Newlands campus: a house with a garden and swimming pool, at the foot of a mountain

Good Hope Studies, English schools in Cape Town, South Africa

Good Hope Studies teaches English to adults in Cape Town, on two very different campuses: a city-centre tower and a house with a garden and swimming pool in Newlands. Here is who they are, how they teach, what sets them apart, and the two campuses we offer.

Who is Good Hope Studies?

Good Hope Studies is an English school in Cape Town, South Africa. On its official website, it presents itself as an internationally recognised school, with very good value for money, in one of the most beautiful cities in the world; it states that it is a member of Eaquals, IALC and English South Africa.

The school highlights “all services from a single provider”: courses, accommodation and leisure programme are organised by the school itself.

We offer its two campuses: the city centre and Newlands.

How they teach

General English courses work on grammar, vocabulary, speaking, reading, listening and writing. Classes have a maximum of 14 students, and each lesson lasts 50 minutes.

The Essential course (16 lessons per week) takes place in the morning, Monday to Thursday, and leaves Friday free; the Standard course (20 lessons) also takes place in the morning, and the afternoons remain free for the leisure programme. Homework is given three to four times a week.

In the Semi-intensive (25 lessons) and Intensive (30 lessons) courses, the afternoons are devoted more to skills — speaking, writing, reading, listening — and to content on South African culture; the Intensive course also includes 6 hours of supervised study. Students thus choose their intensity, by the half-day or by the day.

The morning course can be combined in the afternoon with 5 or 10 group or private lessons, volunteering or a surf course.

What sets Good Hope Studies apart

  • Two campuses, two atmospheres. The city centre, on the 14th floor of an office building, plunges you into the multicultural bustle of Cape Town; Newlands, in a house with a garden and swimming pool, offers a calm setting where you sometimes learn outdoors.
  • Learning that continues outside the classroom. The school’s leisure programme and excursions, the volunteering and surfing offered in the afternoon in the “English Plus” option, and accommodation within walking or short distance of both campuses.
  • Reasonably sized classes. 14 students at most per class, announced on the school’s home page.

Its programmes, and for whom

For adults: General English (Essential, Standard, Semi-intensive, Intensive), General English with private lessons, exam preparation, Business English, and combined options with volunteering or surfing. The official website also presents long-term courses and online private lessons, which are not in our catalogue.

In our catalogue, courses can be booked from age 18. The four General English courses, Business English (English for Work), IELTS preparation and the Cambridge preparations are offered on both campuses; the full-time CELTA teacher training is only offered in the city centre.
