Classroom at the Global Village school in Victoria

Global Village, English language schools in Calgary and Victoria, Canada

Global Village has taught English to adults and young people since 1996, in two human-sized Canadian centres. Here is who they are, how they teach, what sets them apart, and the two centres we offer.

Who is Global Village?

Global Village English Centres is a Canadian language school founded in 1996. On its official website it reports more than 25 years of experience and describes itself as a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) authorised by the Government of Canada.

It has two campuses: Calgary (Alberta), at the foot of the Rockies, and Victoria (British Columbia), on Vancouver Island. The group makes the point that there is more to Canada than Toronto and Vancouver: smaller cities, known for quality of life and safety, where the experience is more personal.

We offer both of its centres: Calgary and Victoria.

How they teach

The General English Programme is the foundation of every course: eight levels from Beginner to Mastery, for stays from 1 to 52+ weeks. You can join at any level; a placement test puts each student in the right class on the first day.

Morning classes, Monday to Friday (8:45 am to 12:20 pm), aim at everyday English: vocabulary and phrases practised through dialogue and role play, grammar presented communicatively, with equal emphasis on accuracy and fluency. Classes average 13 students, with a focus on speaking and feedback from qualified instructors.

In the afternoon (Monday to Thursday), students choose elective classes to work on a specific area: vocabulary, accuracy, fluency, exam preparation. Three daytime intensities: 20 lessons a week (standard), 25 (intensive) or 30 (super intensive), plus part-time options of 5, 7.5 or 10 lessons and evening classes.

What sets Global Village apart

  • Two human-sized cities. Calgary and Victoria rank well in global quality-of-life and safety surveys; the school runs activities, with a published calendar for each campus.
  • Recognised accreditations. Languages Canada, the British Columbia Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU) and British Columbia’s EQA. The Victoria campus is a PTIRU-designated college.
  • Official test centres. Global Village Calgary and Victoria are both official IELTS test centres; CELPIP is offered online.
  • Pathways to higher education. According to the school’s website, students who complete the English for Academic Pathways course can continue at partner institutions such as Camosun College or SAIT without submitting a standardised test score.

Its programmes, and who they are for

For adults: General English (standard, intensive, super intensive or part-time), English for Academic Pathways (EAP, from level GV3), Business English, IELTS preparation (in Victoria, minimum B2) and a study-and-work package (IEC). In Victoria, a beginner French course is also offered. For students aged 50 and over: a morning English programme with excursions and activities.

For young people aged 11 to 17, the school offers summer and winter stays (Teen Explorer, Junior Explorer); they are not covered on this page. In our catalogue, courses can be booked from age 18, except the 50+ programme, which is for students aged 50 and over.
