GenkiJACS Japanese school in Tokyo

GenkiJACS, Japanese school in Tokyo, Kyoto and Fukuoka

GenkiJACS teaches Japanese in Japan, in small classes, on several campuses. Here is who they are, how they teach, what sets them apart, and the three centres we offer.

Who is GenkiJACS?

GenkiJACS (Genki Japanese and Culture School) is a Japanese as a foreign language school. Its official website states that the Fukuoka campus has been supporting students from around the world since 2005. The school also has a campus in Nagoya, opened with the partner school I.C.Nagoya, and a campus in Okinawa.

It is a member of the IALC (International Association of Language Centres), which regularly inspects its schools, and the website states that it is only the third Japanese school admitted to this network. The website also states that it was nominated for the Star Awards, an award in the language school sector, every year from 2009 to 2023 and then in 2025 and 2026, and that it won the “World Language School” category in 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020/2021.

We offer three of its centres, for adults: Tokyo, Kyoto and Fukuoka.

How they teach

For GenkiJACS, you do not learn a language from a textbook alone: you have to feel it, use it, live it. The main course (Core Japanese Course) therefore aims at real communication: speaking, listening, reading and writing, with grammar always tied to situations from life in Japan.

Each weekday includes two grammar lessons and two language practice classes (speaking, comprehension, reading, writing). Classes have eight students at most, and classes exist for all levels, from complete beginner to advanced; the website asks beginners to have learned hiragana before the course starts.

In our catalogue, the Standard Japanese Course has 20 lessons of 50 minutes per week, for a duration of 1 to 52 weeks, in all three centres.

What sets GenkiJACS apart

  • Classes of eight students at most. According to the website, there may exceptionally be nine in high season, for a short period.
  • A start every Monday, no closures. The school does not close during long holiday periods; the duration is free. Complete beginners can only start on the first Monday of the month (the first or third Monday in June, July and August).
  • Three very different cities. Tokyo, Kyoto and Fukuoka each offer a distinct setting (see “The centres in detail” below).
  • Optional modules. The website offers to add conversation classes (four classes per week) or cultural activities on Saturday (kimono, tea ceremony…) to the main course, as well as 50-minute private lessons; not all of these options are in our catalogue, the quote says what can be booked.

Its programmes, and for whom

In addition to the main course, the official website offers private lessons (including online), modules, and long courses with a student visa, reserved for the Fukuoka campus (and Nagoya); it also describes summer programmes for teenagers, which are for a different audience and do not appear on this page.

In our catalogue, one course can be booked in each of the three centres: the Standard Japanese Course, open to all levels. The catalogue sets no minimum age there; the enrolment age is confirmed with the quote.
