GCI Galway, English school in Galway

Galway Cultural Institute, which everyone calls GCI, teaches English in Galway, on the west coast of Ireland, facing the Atlantic. Here is who they are, how they teach, what sets them apart, and the centre we offer.

Who is GCI Galway?

GCI is an English as a foreign language school in Galway. Its official website states that it has offered English programmes since 1989 and welcomes students from more than 30 countries every year. It is an independent Irish company that operates a single centre: it is neither part of a chain nor a franchise. It is the English division of Galway Business School, a private higher education institution in the same city.

The school states that it is accredited by QQI/ACELS and recognised by the Irish Department of Education; it is also accredited by IALC and by Eaquals, which inspected it in 2022 and confirmed that it met its criteria. Its list of accreditations also mentions IELTS and Cambridge English; it is a member of the Galway Chamber of Commerce.

We offer its single centre: Galway.

How they teach

General English courses follow a structured programme covering all CEFR levels, with lessons focused on skills (speaking, writing, listening, reading), vocabulary and grammar. Short weekly assessments let students track their progress, with regular feedback from the teacher; students have access to a portal and to the Moodle platform, where they find their booklet and additional resources.

You can start on any Monday. In our catalogue, General English courses are offered in the morning with 20 or 26 lessons per week, or in the afternoon with 20 lessons, for stays of one to 52 weeks; combined courses add individual lessons in the afternoon to the morning class.

What sets GCI apart

  • An independent school, a single centre, facing the Atlantic. The building is on the Salthill promenade, with a view over Galway Bay; the city is halfway along the Wild Atlantic Way.
  • Programmes for older adults. Our catalogue includes the “English for 30+” programme (from age 30) and its “Executive” version, which adds individual lessons, as well as the “50+” programme, on fixed dates: a course of 20 lessons per week, with an adapted activity programme, to learn alongside people of the same generation.
  • International accreditations. The school highlights IALC and Eaquals, as well as membership of the International House network since January 2025 and of ELE Ireland, of which it is a founding member (2021).
  • An activity programme renewed every week. A calendar is handed out at reception; some activities are free, others are paid.
