Who is ELC?
ELC — English Language Company — is an English-as-a-foreign-language school based in Sydney, Australia. Its official website says it has welcomed international students for more than 20 years, without giving a founding year, and announces more than 25,000 graduates; the school also states that it welcomes more than 45 nationalities each year.
The school is registered with the Australian authorities to accept foreign students (CRICOS code 02551G). Its website highlights several “Star English language school” awards for the Southern Hemisphere and its membership of the Green Standard Schools programme.
ELC also offers youth programmes (not in our catalogue) and CELTA preparation: they are not covered on this page, which presents the adult offer. We offer one centre: Sydney.
How they teach
The school describes a modern, communicative approach, supported by recent textbooks, digital materials, classroom technology and online activities. Teachers hold a university degree and a TESOL qualification. The school applies an English-only rule in the centre.
Courses start every Monday, for all levels, from elementary to advanced, and last from 1 to 52 weeks. The daytime intensive General English course includes 15 hours of General English per week, plus a 5-hour themed module of which the student chooses one option; core classes run Monday to Thursday. The semi-intensive option counts 15 hours of General English.
In the evening, the intensive offers the same volume (15 hours of General English and 5 hours of an optional module), Monday to Friday from 5:00 pm to 9:20 pm. The Premium option adds 5 hours per week of private lessons to the 15 hours of General English. The website does not state class size.
What sets ELC apart
- A centre in the very heart of Sydney. The school is located in Haymarket, next to Central Station: transport, neighbourhoods and local life are within walking distance.
- The choice between day and evening. Intensive General English, IELTS preparation and Academic English also exist as evening courses, which lets you work or sightsee during the day.
- A wide variety of options. From semi-intensive to the Premium option with private lessons, plus “English Plus” programmes (for example surfing or yoga) and a job-search support programme, according to the official website.
- Exams prepared on site. The school prepares for the Cambridge exams (B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency) and for IELTS.
Its programmes, and who they are for
For adults: General English (intensive, semi-intensive, Premium, daytime or evening), General and Professional English, English for higher education, IELTS preparation (in the evening in the catalogue) and Cambridge exams. All levels are open, from elementary to advanced.
In our catalogue: ten flexible-entry courses, starting every Monday, and five fixed-date Cambridge preparation courses. The catalogue sets no minimum age for these courses: we therefore state none here. The official website specifies that the semi-intensive option is part-time and not suitable for a student visa application, whereas the intensive and Premium options are full-time.
