The Dilit school in Rome

Dilit International House, Italian school in Rome

Dilit has taught Italian to foreigners since 1974, in an Art Nouveau villa a stone’s throw from Termini station. Here is who they are, how they teach, what sets them apart, and the centre we offer.

Who is Dilit?

Dilit — “Divulgazione Lingua Italiana” — was created in 1974 and is officially authorised by the Italian Ministry of Education. According to its official website, it was one of the first schools in Italy to teach Italian as a foreign language. It has long been a member of the International House network (more than 150 schools in more than 50 countries).

Each year the school welcomes about 1,700 students from more than 60 countries; in 2025, the leading countries of origin were Germany (18%), Switzerland (9%) and Brazil (9%), ahead of France (5%). Dilit also publishes its own textbooks and trains Italian teachers, in a training centre approved by the ministry.

How they teach

Dilit describes a method “refined over decades of research and experimentation”, in a multicultural setting where every student should feel welcome. Group courses take place in the morning and cover all levels, from complete beginner to advanced, all year round.

The options range from the group course of 15 or 20 lessons per week to combined courses (20 group lessons in the morning, plus one-to-one lessons in the afternoon). The school prepares for the CILS (University of Siena) and CELI (University of Perugia) exams, of which it is an exam centre.

What sets Dilit apart

  • A historic and recognised school. Member of International House, IALC and ASILS, accredited by the Swedish board of student finance (CSN).
  • A central location. Via Marghera, short and quiet, a stone’s throw from Termini station: the whole city is easily accessible.
  • Support before and during the stay. The reception helps with the residence permit, the tax code and health assistance; a partner travel insurance is offered at the school.

Its programmes, and who they are for

General Italian group courses (15 or 20 lessons per week), combined courses with one-to-one lessons (26 or 30 lessons per week), “Young Adults” aged 18-22 with guided tours and cultural activities, CILS and CELI exam preparation, business Italian, Italian through architecture, photography or gastronomy, as well as academic programmes (semester, year, preparation for Italian universities).

The minimum age is 16, both on the school’s website and in our catalogue. Group courses and combined courses exist in beginner and non-beginner versions.
