Celtica, English school in Cardiff, Wales
Celtica has taught English to adults in Cardiff since 2004, in small classes and three Victorian buildings in the city centre. Here is who they are, how they teach, what sets them apart, and the school we offer.
Who is Celtica?
Celtica is an English school located in Cardiff, the capital of Wales. On its official website, it states that it opened in 2004 under the name Celtic School, was accredited by the British Council in 2008, then became Celtic English Academy; the school now presents itself under the name Celtica.
It has a single centre, in Cardiff: it is the one we offer. The school states that it welcomed, in a single year, more than 1,000 students from more than 50 countries; it occupies three Victorian buildings in the city centre, one of which was recently renovated.
Besides the courses for adults, the official website presents programmes for young people and for groups; they are not part of this page.
How they teach
Classes have 10 students at most, which the school highlights to ensure individual attention. The core course, General English, offers 15 hours per week (20 lessons of 45 minutes), Monday to Friday, from 8:45 to 10:15 a.m. then from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00, with a possible start on any Monday, for a duration of 1 to 50 weeks.
The programme follows an integrated-skills approach: reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, from a textbook given at the start of the course. Levels range from beginner (A1) to advanced (C1).
You can build your own course: at lunchtime, Monday to Thursday, optional 1 h 30 classes (IELTS or Cambridge preparation, business English, language skills) bring the total to 21 hours (28 lessons) per week, and General English classes are also available in the afternoon.
What sets Celtica apart
- Classes of 10 students at most. This is the school’s central commitment, with individual support ranging from accommodation to social activities.
- Accreditations and exam centres. The school is accredited by the British Council (inspection of June 2016) and by the IALC, a member of English UK and English UK Wales. It is a Trinity and LanguageCert exam centre, offers INTO assessment (IELA) and presents itself as the only Occupational English Test (OET) centre in Wales.
- Teacher training on site. The school prepares for the Cambridge CELTA, over four weeks full-time (more than 120 contact hours, with practice in front of real students).
- A city-centre setting. Cardiff is presented by the school as a lively city with many parks; students meet there across nationalities, and a dedicated team helps them with accommodation, transfers from most British airports and practical arrangements.
