A classroom at the BEET centre in Bournemouth

BEET, English school in Bournemouth

BEET is a small independent English school, based in Bournemouth on the south coast of England. Here is who they are, how they teach, what sets them apart, and the centre we offer.

Who is BEET?

BEET — Beet Language Centre — was founded in 1979 by Clive Barrow, with three students. Its official website describes it as an independent, family-run, medium-sized school: about 150 students on average, from 20 to 40 countries.

The school is housed in a 19th-century church school building, equipped with recent technology, in the residential district of Charminster, in Bournemouth. It is a founding member of TEN (The English Network), a group of independent schools. Its website links to a 2022 British Council inspection report.

We offer its adult centre: Bournemouth.

How they teach

All students follow a core programme of 20 lessons (15 hours) per week. They can add one or two subjects of their choice, of 4 or 8 extra lessons per week (3 or 6 hours), focused on a skill or an exam. Classes have at most 14 students, 9 on average from September to June and 10 in July-August.

Levels range from A1 to C1. Regular tests check level and progress, each teacher holds an individual review with the student every four weeks, and a certificate with a progress report is given at the end of studies.

Each student also receives one year of unlimited access to Beet Online, the school’s platform: hundreds of exercises, textbooks, podcasts and a grammar tool, the “Grammar Doctor”.

What sets BEET apart

  • An independent, family-run school. Founded in 1979 and still independent, it claims a medium size that allows, according to its website, a structured programme and individual attention.
  • A free social programme, five evenings a week. Teachers run evenings: karaoke, quizzes, film nights, games, art workshops, music evenings; new activities every week.
  • Saturday excursions. Supervised by teachers, they go to London, Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, Salisbury and Stonehenge, or to the Isle of Wight; the school states a usual cost of £45 to £50.
  • Long experience with Cambridge exams. The school prepares for Cambridge exams, IELTS and, for a German-speaking audience, “Bildungsurlaub” educational leave.

Its programmes, and who they are for

For adults: General English (core programme, or with one or two options), IELTS preparation and Cambridge FCE / CAE courses, all year round or as summer courses of 2 to 8 weeks. The school also offers courses for closed groups and an international academic year; they are not part of our catalogue.

In our catalogue, all courses can be booked from age 18: nine flexible-entry courses starting every Monday (1 to 52 weeks, or 2 to 8 weeks for the Cambridge summer courses), and three fixed-date Cambridge courses. Levels: from elementary to upper intermediate, up to upper advanced depending on the course. We do not state any other minimum age, because the school’s website does not give the same figure as our catalogue.
