The official codifications of language levels

Basic user A1

Able to understand and use simple, familiar expressions, as well as basic sentences that meet concrete needs. Can introduce themselves, introduce someone else and ask basic questions (for example, about where they live or what belongs to them). Can answer this kind of question in a simple way.

Basic user A2

Able to understand isolated sentences and common expressions linked to immediate needs or familiar areas (for example, personal information, shopping, or the immediate environment). Can take part in simple exchanges on familiar subjects.

Independent user B1

Able to understand the main points when the language is clear and standard, particularly in familiar contexts such as work or leisure. Can cope with most situations encountered while travelling. Can produce simple, connected speech on familiar subjects and recount events, experiences or dreams.

Independent user B2

Able to understand the main ideas of a complex text, whether concrete or abstract, including technical discussions in their own field. Can interact with a native speaker with ease and spontaneity. Can express ideas clearly and in detail on a wide range of subjects.

Proficient user C1

Able to understand a wide range of complex texts, including implicit nuances. Can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without any obvious effort to find the right words. Uses the language effectively in social, professional and academic contexts.

Proficient user C2

Able to understand practically everything read or heard without effort. Can summarise information from different sources and present it coherently. Expresses themselves spontaneously, fluently and with great precision, while distinguishing subtle shades of meaning.
